Another c.d. given to me at a gig, this time it’s Scottish heavyweights Swellbellys. I hadn’t realised until I open this c.d. how many single tracks the band have put out in the last 5 years, 24 in total and you get the added bonus of ‘White Riot’ recorded live in the studio as an extra track. Swellbellys should need no introduction but to the uninitiated they play very fast aggressive hardcore punk and are a very formidable live act. The combination of the power and speed they play with the all out attack of Needles the singer is something that has to been seen live. Back to this c.d. 25 tracks in 49 minutes may give you some idea how fast the band are, and seeing as a lot of these tracks would have been on limited edition release vinyl probably your only chance of getting hold of them. Comparisons to the Exploited are obvious as the band come from Edinburgh but I reckon Swellbellys have a much better, tighter sound. This is a definite must have if you like fast, aggressive shouty hardcore.
